The Forbidden Palace, The Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven all in one day!

A túra | The tour

The hotel recommended us a tour of Beijing’s main attractions, including the Forbidden Palace, Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven, an english tour guide and lunch. Researching for a bit on the internet we found many other companies offering a very similar tour, so we went with simplicity and chose the one leaving from the hotel - thinking we’d save a bunch of time traveling from place to place and have more time for the sights. As it turned out we were wrong, the bus was stuck a lot in traffic jams and they took us to 2 surprise locations: a “pearl factory” and a “silk museum”, i.e. two stores which were only for tour groups to shop. Also the tour guide in her first sentence proudly announced that she spoke “Chinglish”, i.e. Chinese English, which we hardly understood. And finally we only spent about 1-1 hour on the sights, as we were rushed along by our tour guide. Needless to say we were not amused. We learned our lesson the hard way and will not be booking tour guides from our hotel, but rather choosing and independent operator.

A Tiltott Város | The Forbidden Palace

Regardless of the fact that the opening time for tour groups was earlier than for individuals, the place was already packed, which wasn’t a surprise as they warned us that the schools in China have their holiday now. The palace was very impressive full of huge squares and freshly renovated buildings: exactly 980 buildings on 177 acres, which is hardly visitable in a day.

The Forbidden Palace

In between photographing all the buildings, old Chinese carvings and statues, we became aware that many locals were staring at us. The braver ones even asked us to take a photo with them. Us white foreigners were bigger stars than the Forbidden Palace! And in our tour we also had an African American with dreadlocks! We found it quite absurd, but gladly took photos with random people. In retrospect we should have charged a few Yuan for the photos to make some money for a nice dinner.

If it weren’t for the huge crowds, we would have loved to wander around in the Forbidden palace, but our next destination awaited us. Although to be precise it was the next-next destination that we wanted, because we had to stop in the not-so-awaited “pearl factory”, where after a brief presentation on pearls we had flocks of store attendants trying to get us to buy something.

A Nyári Palota | The Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is in the north-west part of the city and in essence is a large lake with a few small islands and a palace at the end of it. They originally built the lake as a reservoir for Beijing. The park itself is humongous, you could rent boats in many places and paddle around the lake for hours, which is very scenic. We also took a boat to the island and then headed to the palace.

One of the most famous inhabitants of the palace was an empress, so there were Chinese female motives in many places, which differs from a typical emperor’s palace. We walked along a 700m long corridor which was sectioned by 4 pagodas, representing each season. After checking out a few similar buildings we went back to the bus, already famished.

The promised lunch was in a local restaurant and was very similar to the lunch after our Great Wall tour: we sat at a round table which had a rotating center plate, so you could rotate all the dishes to you to try them. The only difference was that they served about the same amount of food for 9 of us as on the previous day for 6 of us. We didn’t leave hungry, but wouldn’t have objected to eating a bit more of the better dishes.

Az Ég Temploma | The Temple of Heaven

After visiting the other not-so-awaited “silk museum”, we finally arrived at the Temple of Heaven. This was also surrounded by a huge park, which due to time constraints we couldn’t wander around in. The local elderly came to the park to play all kinds of games - such as cards, mahjong and go - and enjoying their weekend and the company in the nice summer weather.

Similarly to other old buildings, the temple itself was freshly renovated for the Olympics. It boasted very vibrant blues, and as we learned the blue symbolized the sky and the heavens. The temple is also famous for being the largest wooden structure built without nails.

Esti sör és Street Food | Beers and street food

After the long tour (and all of its inconveniences) we rested for a bit at the hotel and then following our trusty Small Beijing Guide (i.e. Richard’s and Panka’s recommendations), we headed to a local craft beer pub. On the way we encountered a busy street with many street foods and restaurants, so we decided that after a well deserved beer we would come back here to eat.

Busy street food street

The pub was located in a cosy garden and had many westerners enjoying their Saturday - it seems like good craft beer attracts them :) After downing a pint we headed back to the street food area and ate a bunch of things: french fries (Petra was craving them since the morning), fried shrimps, dumplings and thin duck burritos, which were very popular with the locals.

The Great Leap pub

After we were full we headed home and on the way we encountered loud music and a bunch of dancing people. We would have joined them if it weren’t for that the dance was some kind of a latin-mix accompanied by Chinese music. A bit further along the way we saw people performing karaoke on the streets - since we didn’t know the music it was hard to judge if they were any good. This pattern again repeated itself: first a square of dancers and then karaoke party a bit later. We’re not sure if this was a special occasion or just every Saturday is like that on this street of Beijing, but it wouldn’t hurt if our cities had these kinds of activities on the streets :)

Első mosás | Laundry time!

Since Akos ran out of clothes, the time for the first laundry day came. We’ve already done this during our trip to Sri Lanka, so it’s not new to us, but might be interesting for some of our readers. The process is simple: in the washbasin wet the clothes, then add a bit of washing soap (we us Soak Wash) and let it soak for 10 minutes. Then we wash and rinse the clothes and hang to dry. Just like that we did 2 “loads” in 30 minutes and the clothes dried for the next day (since they were made from wool).
